But the first months are often disappointing. Pages get indexed, yet impressions barely move. Links that would make a real difference in a smaller regional market are barely noticeable here. Copy that seemed perfectly fine doesn’t convert. And it’s not that Google works differently in America. It’s that every position there is contested by companies with years of history, in-house content teams, and serious budgets.

In this article we break down what actually changes when your audience lives across the ocean: the level of competition, the cost and quality of links, what the copy has to do, local SEO at the state and city level, trust signals, legal pages, hosting, and support across time zones. Language versions, domains, and
hreflang
are covered separately in our article “SEO in English-speaking markets”. Here we focus on what is specific to the United States.

Competition: why the same query is harder in the US

Before starting, we look at real Google results from a US location, not tool forecasts. The picture is almost always the same: commercial queries are dominated by major brands, marketplaces, directories like Yelp, media outlets with “best of” roundups, and niche sites that have invested in content for years. For a newcomer, that means attacking broad queries head-on is the most expensive and slowest path.

Here is how we assess where there is a real chance and where there isn’t:

Query type

Who usually ranks

Our approach

Broad commercial (“buy X”)

Marketplaces, big retailers

We don’t start here; we come back later

Commercial with a qualifier (material, use case, audience)

Niche stores and services

Main focus for the first months

Comparison (“X vs Y”, “best X for…”)

Review media, affiliate sites

Honest comparisons based on our own experience

Local (“near me”, city, state)

Google Maps, directories, local businesses

Only with a real presence in the area

Informational (“how to…”)

Major media, forums, Reddit

Narrow questions where we are genuine experts

The practical takeaway: in the US we deliberately narrow the keyword set at launch. Instead of a hundred generic queries, we pick a few dozen narrow ones where competitors are weaker and the searcher’s intent is closer to a purchase. We describe how to collect and cluster such queries in “Building a keyword map”. The principles are the same; only the data sources and the location you check from change.

Another quick indicator is the estimated Google Ads cost per click for the same queries in the US. A high CPC means the query makes money, so serious players fight for it organically too. That tells us to find narrower phrasing or budget more for content and links.

A schematic view: broad commercial, comparison and informational queries are the most contested in the US, so at launch we target qualified commercial queries.

One more thing to plan for is seasonality and the retail calendar. Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Thanksgiving, Back to School, Memorial Day: for American shoppers these are real demand peaks, not just holidays. We prepare pages for these events well in advance so they have time to get indexed and pick up links before searches spike.

What the copy has to do: Americans read differently

The most common mistake we see is copy written in English but structured with another market’s logic: a long company history, phrases like “high quality at affordable prices,” nothing concrete. American users expect something else: the answer up front, facts, prices, and a clear next step.

What we require from copy for the US

The answer in the first paragraph. What it is, who it’s for, what it costs or what the price depends on. The explanation comes after.

American English. Color, not colour; dates written month/day/year; prices in dollars; inches, feet, pounds, and Fahrenheit wherever shoppers expect them. Clothing and shoe sizes follow US size charts.

Specifics instead of adjectives. Not “fast shipping” but actual delivery times across the country; not “reliable” but the warranty, materials, and certifications.

A scannable structure. Short paragraphs, question-style subheadings, comparison tables, lists. People skim and hunt for their answer.

Visible experience. An author with a bio, real photos of the product or process, your own tests, examples from practice. This is what Google describes as E-E-A-T, and in competitive US niches it is hard to rank without it.

Honest comparisons. The US market is saturated with reviews, so “we’re the best” doesn’t work. What works is “here’s where we’re stronger, and here’s who would be better served by another option.”

The tone should be direct and friendly, addressed to “you,” without jargon or hype. Have a native speaker who knows the niche do the final edit: American readers spot machine translation from the first sentence. We’ve collected the general rules of page structure in “Writing content for your website”.

As for length, we don’t chase word counts. We look at the questions top-ranking pages answer and make ours answer them more clearly, whether that takes a long guide or a short page with a calculator.

Links: more expensive, with a higher quality bar

Link building is where US budgets most often break. First, American sites with real traffic know their worth: placements cost noticeably more than on regional sites. Second, top competitors usually already have hundreds of quality referring domains, so a few dozen paid articles won’t change the picture. Third, the market is flooded with sites that exist only to sell links, and they bring nothing but risk.

Google explicitly classifies buying links to influence rankings as spam. If a placement is paid for, it should carry the
rel="sponsored"
attribute. That’s why we build link profiles for the US mostly on links that are earned rather than bought.

What works in our projects

Digital PR. Your own study, survey, or useful dataset that journalists and bloggers want to cite. One successful story brings links from media outlets that don’t sell placements.

Expert commentary. There are services where journalists look for expert sources. Answering regularly on your topic gradually earns mentions in industry publications.

Partnerships and suppliers. Manufacturers, distributors, integrations, associations: they often have “Where to buy,” “Partners,” or “Members” pages.

Local sources. City chambers of commerce, local sponsorships, events, state industry directories, for companies with a presence in the area.

Guest content with real value. Only on sites with a living audience in your topic, never on “blogs about everything.”

How we evaluate a donor site: does it get organic traffic from the US specifically, is it topically related to our niche, does it publish anything besides sponsored posts, and do its outbound links look natural. If even two of these raise doubts, we pass, even when the price is attractive. We keep anchor text natural, too: the brand name, the site URL, descriptive phrases, rather than the same commercial keyword in every link.

Links in the US are a long game. Instead of promising the top spot for your main keyword, we offer a transparent plan that shows where every link comes from and why.

Local SEO: states, cities, and Google Business Profile

From a search perspective, the US isn’t one country. It’s fifty states with different cities, prices, laws, and even vocabulary. For businesses with a physical presence, local results (the map pack and directories) often matter more than the regular organic listings.

What we set up for local visibility:

Google Business Profile. You need a real address where you serve customers, or a properly configured service-area business. Google doesn’t accept virtual offices or mailboxes, and attempts to work around this end with a suspended profile.

Consistent NAP data. Your name, address, and phone number should appear the same way on the site, in Google, Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing Places, and industry directories.

State and city pages. Only where you genuinely have something to say: local conditions, licenses, project examples, timelines, reviews from customers in that area. Google treats hundreds of identical pages where only the city name changes as doorway pages.

A US phone number. A local or toll-free number is a basic signal that customers can reach you the way they’re used to.

Regional details. Sales tax depends on the state, and some services also require state licenses. These things should be explained on the site before the shopper reaches the cart.

With no physical presence in the US, don’t fake one. For e-commerce and online services, nationwide SEO, clear shipping, and honesty about where you operate from are enough.

Trust and legal pages

Before buying from an unfamiliar company, American shoppers check whether it can be trusted, both on your site and in search: your brand name plus “reviews,” “scam,” or “legit.”

Trust signals

Reviews on third-party platforms. Google, Yelp, Trustpilot, and for B2B and software, Clutch, G2, and Capterra. Reviews that live only on your own site are far less convincing.

Better Business Bureau. For many Americans, a BBB profile is a familiar reference point. Accreditation is mostly available to companies with a presence in North America; if you don’t have it, the other independent platforms matter even more.

Clear policies. Shipping Policy, Return & Refund Policy, warranty, Terms of Service: each on its own page, linked from the footer and from product pages.

Familiar payment methods. Cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay. An unfamiliar payment gateway at checkout is a common reason for abandoned carts.

A real company behind the site. An About page with the team, a business address, contact details, answers to common questions.

A note on reviews: the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explicitly prohibits fake reviews and reviews bought in exchange for undisclosed incentives. So we only set up honest collection: an automated request after purchase that goes to every customer equally, plus public responses to negative feedback.

Privacy and accessibility

This is the area companies coming to the US from Europe underestimate most often. There is no comprehensive federal privacy law in the US comparable to GDPR, but there are state laws. The best known is California’s CCPA as amended by the CPRA, and a growing number of states are adopting their own. Businesses that fall under them need a detailed Privacy Policy, a way to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal data, and careful handling of cookies and ad pixels. If you send email or SMS marketing, separate federal rules apply: CAN-SPAM and the TCPA.

The second area is website accessibility. Courts in many cases have applied the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to websites, and lawsuits over inaccessible sites have long been a visible trend, especially in e-commerce. The usual technical benchmark is WCAG at level AA. In practice, that means:

alt text for images and clear labels for buttons;

sufficient contrast for text and interface elements;

full keyboard operation of the site, including menus, filters, and the cart;

labeled form fields and understandable error messages;

captions for videos;

an Accessibility Statement page with a contact for feedback.

Important: “accessibility overlay” widgets that promise to fix everything with a single script don’t solve the problem; the markup itself has to change. We don’t write legal texts in place of a lawyer, but we always check that the site has every page it needs and that the technical side matches what those pages promise.

Hosting, speed, and time zones

A site hosted in Europe is physically far from a user in California: every request crosses an ocean and a continent. For a store with dozens of scripts and images, that delay noticeably hurts Core Web Vitals, and Google measures them using real-user data from your American visitors.

Our baseline setup for US-focused sites:

A CDN with North American edge locations for static assets and, where possible, for cached HTML pages.

A US-based server if most of the audience is there and the site is dynamic (cart, user accounts, search).

Testing from US locations: we run speed tests and check search results from different US regions, not from our own office.

Core Web Vitals targets: LCP under 2.5 s, INP under 200 ms, CLS under 0.1, measured for mobile traffic on American networks.

You can see how we speed sites up in practice on our website speed optimization page.

The four contiguous US time zones: while Americans are at work, it is already evening in Europe, so support should be planned around their clock.

Now about people. The contiguous United States spans four time zones (Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific), with Alaska and Hawaii on top of that. From Central and Eastern Europe, New York is typically six or seven hours behind, and Los Angeles nine or ten. The American workday falls on a European evening and night. If a customer writes at lunchtime their time and gets a reply the next day, they’ve already bought from a competitor.

What we recommend setting up:

support hours stated in US time (ET or PT, for example), not in your home time zone;

a chat or messaging channel (WhatsApp, Messenger, or SMS, depending on your audience) with an honest “we’ll reply within N hours” status;

an email auto-reply with response times and useful links;

an expanded FAQ page that answers typical questions without an agent;

content, newsletters, and promotions scheduled by US time, so emails don’t land at 3 a.m.

What this looks like in practice

A typical situation: a home goods manufacturer already selling in Europe launches an English-language store for the US. It runs on European hosting, the copy is translated, prices are in dollars, but shipping and returns are vague. There are almost no links and no third-party reviews.

We start not with links but with the foundation: we move static assets to a CDN, test speed from different US regions, run the site through a basic WCAG check, and add Shipping, Returns, Privacy, and Accessibility pages. In parallel, we rewrite categories and top product pages with a native speaker, using US units, sizes, and honest comparisons. We narrow the keyword set to queries with a clear use case. Then we launch review collection on Trustpilot and Google, and build links through partners, distributors, and one small original market study. The first results show up on narrow queries, and only after that do we gradually move on to broader ones.

Mistakes we see most often

Starting with the broadest queries. Months of work with no visible result, and disappointment in SEO as a whole.

Cheap links in bulk packages. Hundreds of placements on sites with no traffic that, at best, do nothing.

Translation instead of adaptation. Metric units, European sizes, textbook English, and a tone that feels foreign to Americans.

Missing policies. No clear return, privacy, or accessibility terms, so shoppers leave and legal risks grow.

Hundreds of identical city pages. Instead of local traffic, you get quality problems across the whole site.

Support on your home time. Requests sit unanswered until morning while the customer picks a competitor.

A short pre-launch checklist

Search results checked from a US location, narrow queries selected for launch.

Copy adapted by a native speaker: American English, US units, prices in dollars.

Shipping, Returns, Privacy, Terms, and Accessibility pages in place.

Site checked against core WCAG AA requirements.

CDN connected, speed tested from several US regions.

Review collection set up on third-party platforms.

Support hours listed in US time.

A link plan with no bought “packages.”

Frequently asked questions

Can you do SEO in the US without a company or office there?

Yes. For online stores, SaaS, and online services it’s common practice. The limitations mostly concern local results and Google Business Profile, which require a real address. What matters is being honest about who you are and where you operate from, and offering clear shipping, payment, and support.

How long does it take to see results?

It depends on the niche and the site’s starting point. In the US we plan for more time than in less competitive markets: the first movement on narrow queries takes months, not weeks. We wrote about realistic growth stages in “Growing traffic in six months”.

Do I really need to make my site WCAG-compliant?

The law doesn’t spell out a technical standard for every private website, but the risk of lawsuits is real, and an accessible site is easier for every visitor to use. We consider baseline WCAG AA conformance a mandatory part of entering the US market.

Can you get by without buying links?

Not always entirely, but the core of your link profile is better built on earned links: PR, partnerships, expert commentary, useful content. If a placement is paid for, it should be marked as sponsored.

The bottom line

SEO for the US isn’t just “the same site in English.” Competition is tougher, links cost more and face a higher quality bar, the copy has to be specific and written for American readers, and trust is built through reviews on independent platforms, clear policies, and an accessible site. On top of that come speed for users across the ocean and support in their time zone.

If you’re planning to enter the American market, or you’re already there and not seeing results, get in touch. We’ll run an audit and put together an SEO plan that reflects the competition in your niche, and for online stores we can help with ecommerce development that builds in US market requirements from day one.

What changes when your audience lives across the ocean: competition, link costs and what the copy has to
