So we open the same site on an ordinary smartphone over mobile data, and the picture changes. Half the text is hidden or missing, the main image shows up after four seconds, the “Order” button is tiny and sits right next to another one, and the first thing a visitor sees is a full-screen newsletter popup. That is exactly the version Google uses as the basis when it decides what your site is worth.

Mobile-first indexing is not a separate “mobile ranking”, and it is not a trend you can wait out. It is simply how the search engine crawls, indexes and evaluates websites today. Below we walk through what it actually looks at on a phone, where problems usually hide, and how we check and fix them in our studio’s projects: from content parity to Core Web Vitals, tap targets and lazy loading.

What mobile-first indexing is and what it changes

Search engines used to look at a site through the eyes of a desktop browser, and the mobile version was treated as an extra. Now it’s the other way round: the main crawler is Googlebot Smartphone. It loads the page the way a phone sees it, and that content is what goes into the index. Text, links, structured data, meta tags: all of it is taken from the mobile version. The desktop version doesn’t disappear, but for ranking purposes it’s secondary.

This has three practical consequences that we explain to every client:

If it isn’t on the mobile version, it doesn’t exist for search. If you’ve hidden a category description, part of the specifications or the reviews block on phones while it’s still there on desktop, rankings will be based on the cut-down page.

Usability on a phone is an evaluation criterion, not a bonus. Speed, layout stability, readable text and the absence of intrusive popups affect both how people behave and the page quality signals.

You have to test on a phone. Checking on a big monitor with a narrow browser window doesn’t show the real picture: a different processor, a different network, different gestures.

The good news: a responsive site that serves the same HTML to every device and only changes the layout with CSS is already halfway there. Problems start where the mobile version lives a life of its own: on an
m.
subdomain, as a separate template, or through scripts that strip out “unnecessary” parts for small screens.

Content parity: the mobile version must not be a cut-down copy

The most common mistake we find during audits is the urge to make the mobile version “lighter”. A designer removes the long text under a product listing because it takes up three screens. A developer drops the related products block to speed things up. Someone switches off breadcrumbs because they don’t fit on one line. Together, these “sensible” decisions remove exactly what the page used to rank for.

The rule is simple: all important content has to be in the mobile HTML. You can tuck it into a tab, an accordion or a “Read more” block; search engines take that text into account as long as it is present in the page code from the start. What you shouldn’t do is load it only after the user taps something: the crawler doesn’t tap buttons.

Here is what we compare between the mobile and desktop versions on key page types:

What we check

How it should be

Typical problem

Main text and headings

Same text, same H1–H3

Category description removed on phones

Internal links

Menu, breadcrumbs and linking blocks available

Mobile menu is built by a script after a tap

Images and video

Same files, alt text, captions, crawlable URLs

Photos replaced with placeholders or CSS backgrounds

Reviews and specifications

Present in the code, even if inside an accordion

Loaded only after a tap

Pagination and listings

Plain links to the following pages

Only a “Show more” button with no URLs

If the mobile version must differ, we cut decoration (large banners, animation, secondary widgets), never text, links or product data.

Headings, text, images, reviews and structured data must all be present on mobile, even if some of them sit inside accordions.

Meta tags, structured data and technical signals

Parity isn’t only about visible text. The crawler reads the “behind the scenes” part of the page from the mobile version too, so any mismatch there hurts indexing just as much. Here is what we check:

Title and meta description should be identical on both versions. There’s no need to shorten the title “for a small screen”: the search engine will truncate it in the results by itself.

Meta robots should hold no surprises. More than once we’ve found a
noindex
left in a mobile template after testing.

Structured data such as Product, BreadcrumbList, Article, FAQ and Organization has to be in the mobile code as well. If a plugin adds markup only to the desktop template, rich results disappear.

Canonical and hreflang are straightforward on a responsive site. A separate mobile version on
m.
needs reciprocal
rel="alternate"
and
rel="canonical"
tags, and hreflang should point from mobile versions to mobile versions.

robots.txt must not block CSS, JavaScript or images. Without them the crawler can’t render the page and judge how it looks on a phone.

The viewport tag:
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
. Without it, a phone shows a shrunken copy of the desktop page.

If the site serves different HTML depending on the device (so-called dynamic serving), the server should send a
Vary: User-Agent
header, and the mobile crawler must receive the same version that real people get on their phones. We cover the technical foundations of a page in more detail in our article “On-page SEO basics”.

Speed on a phone: Core Web Vitals

A phone is the strictest judge of speed: a weaker processor runs JavaScript slower, mobile networks are unstable, and people on the move are less patient. That’s why we always open the mobile section of the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console first.

Google evaluates three metrics based on data from real visitors, and at least 75% of visits need to fall within the “good” threshold:

Metric

Target

What usually gets in the way on phones

LCP: main content appears

up to 2.5 s

Heavy hero image, sliders, slow server response, render-blocking fonts

INP: response to interactions

up to 200 ms

Large JS bundles, chat widgets, trackers, heavy filter and menu handlers

CLS: layout stability

up to 0.1

Images and banners without dimensions, ad slots, cookie bars that push text down

What we do most often to improve mobile metrics:

Serve images in WebP or AVIF with a
srcset
attribute, so a phone downloads a file sized for its screen rather than a 2,000-pixel desktop image.

Load the main above-the-fold image with priority (
fetchpriority="high"
) instead of lazily.

Set width and height on every image, banner and iframe, and reserve space for ads and dynamic blocks.

Defer non-critical scripts and remove old tracking pixels and widgets nobody uses.

Load fonts with
font-display: swap
and limit the number of weights.

Set up caching, compression and a CDN; if the server takes longer than 600 ms to respond, it’s time to talk about hosting.

The full technical work is part of our website speed optimization service. Remember that a PageSpeed Insights score is a lab test, while rankings rely on real-user data; the two don’t always agree.

And don’t chase a perfect 100. What matters is that most real visits pass on your key templates; a slow template carrying half your traffic deserves attention before an already green page.

Usability: tap targets, fonts and intrusive popups

A fast site that is awkward to use with one hand still loses visitors. We test usability the way people actually hold phones: one-handed, with the thumb, on the go.

Size and placement of elements

Buttons, links and form fields need to be big enough to hit easily with a finger. Our guideline is a touch area of at least 48×48 CSS pixels with about 8 pixels of space between neighboring elements. We pay particular attention to pagination, filters, quantity selectors and footer links, because that’s where elements most often end up crammed together.

The second question is where the main actions sit. The bottom and center of the screen are easy to reach with the thumb without shifting your grip; the top corners are not. So we move the “Buy” or “Call” button toward the bottom of the screen, and sometimes pin it there as the visitor scrolls.

The thumb’s reachable zone, minimum element size, 16-pixel body text and the difference between a full-screen popup and a compact banner.

Fonts and readability

Body text of at least 16 pixels, with line height around 1.5.

Enough contrast between text and background: light gray text on white is unreadable in sunlight.

No horizontal scrolling: wide tables go into a scrollable container, and images are limited to the screen width.

Don’t disable zoom:
user-scalable=no
hurts people with poor eyesight.

Popups and interstitials

A newsletter popup that immediately covers all the content on a phone is one of the things search engines explicitly describe as a poor experience. We don’t ban popups altogether; we follow a few simple rules:

Mandatory dialogs, such as cookie consent or age verification, take up minimal space and don’t cover the main text.

Marketing offers appear as a small banner or after a specific action, not in the first second.

The popup can be closed with a single action, and the close button is a reasonable size.

Forms

Keep fields to a minimum, use the right keyboard type (
type="tel"
for phone numbers,
type="email"
for email), enable autofill, and show clear error messages next to the field. On a phone, every extra field noticeably reduces the number of inquiries. For online stores we walk through the entire path to checkout separately; you can read more in “Five tips for ecommerce SEO”.

Lazy loading: where it backfires

Lazy loading is a useful tool for mobile speed, but configured badly it either slows the page down or hides content from the crawler. These are the traps we run into most often:

A lazy hero image. A
loading="lazy"
attribute on the above-the-fold image delays exactly the element LCP is measured on. Only images below the first screen should be lazy.

Content that appears only after scrolling or tapping. The crawler doesn’t scroll the page the way a person does, and it doesn’t tap buttons. If text, reviews or products load only on a scroll or click event, they may never make it into the index. Native
loading="lazy"
or IntersectionObserver are the safer choices.

Images without a real URL. When the actual image path sits only in
data-src
and
src
holds a transparent placeholder, search engines can’t see the images. Check that the rendered code contains the real URL.

Infinite scroll without pagination. It must be backed by plain links to pages 2, 3 and 4, each with its own URL; otherwise the crawler sees only the first batch of products or posts.

Lazy blocks without dimensions. When the image finally loads, it pushes the text around, and CLS goes up.

A simple check after every template update: open the page in URL Inspection in Search Console and search the rendered HTML for text from the bottom of the page, the last product name and a few image URLs. If something is missing, look for the script waiting for a user action.

Tools for testing the mobile version

Google no longer offers a standalone mobile-friendly test, so we put the picture together from several tools:

URL Inspection in Search Console. Shows which crawler fetched the page, the rendered HTML and a screenshot. It’s the quickest way to see what Googlebot Smartphone actually gets.

Core Web Vitals report in Search Console. Real-user data grouped by page type, split into mobile and desktop.

PageSpeed Insights and Lighthouse. CrUX field data for the page plus lab diagnostics: what exactly is slowing LCP and which scripts block the main thread.

Device mode in Chrome DevTools. Emulates the screen, a slow network and a weaker CPU; useful for checking tap targets and layout shifts.

Rich Results Test. Validates structured data on the mobile version of the page.

Real phones. At least one budget Android device and one iPhone, on mobile data rather than office Wi-Fi.

Server logs. Show how often the mobile crawler visits and whether it gets errors or redirects that real people never see.

What this looks like in practice

A typical situation: a service business website with a blog, a few hundred pages. On desktop everything looks tidy, but organic traffic from phones is declining and there are almost no inquiries from mobile. During the audit we find a mobile template with the service descriptions and half the internal links removed; Organization and FAQ markup that is output only on desktop; a slider on the first screen with lazy loading; and a newsletter popup that opens one second after arrival.

We bring all content back into the mobile HTML, tucking long blocks into accordions, move the markup into the shared template, replace the slider with a single optimized image, and turn the popup into a small banner at the end of each article. After recrawling, the mismatches disappear and the Core Web Vitals report gradually turns green. We don’t promise exact figures, as they depend on the niche, but steady growth in mobile traffic and inquiries usually starts with fixes like these.

Six mistakes we see most often

If you recognize your site in at least two of these, that’s where to start.

A “lite” mobile version. Text, specifications and internal links were removed for compactness, and rankings for mid-volume queries went with them.

Testing only on desktop. The team sees the site on a big monitor with fast internet, while customers see it on budget smartphones on the subway.

A slider on the first screen. Several large photos, animation and a carousel script: the classic way to ruin LCP and INP at the same time.

Unmanaged third-party widgets. A chat, several analytics pixels, a reviews widget and a callback button together weigh more than the entire site.

Tiny controls. Footer links, size selectors and popup close icons that are impossible to hit on the first try.

Different rules for the crawler and for people. A separate simplified HTML for the mobile user agent, redirects from inner pages to the mobile homepage, resources blocked for the crawler.

Quick checklist

Mobile and desktop versions have the same main text, headings and internal links.

Title, description, meta robots, canonical and structured data match.

robots.txt doesn’t block CSS, JS or images; the viewport tag is in place.

LCP up to 2.5 s, INP up to 200 ms, CLS up to 0.1 in the mobile report in Search Console.

The hero image isn’t lazy-loaded, and every media element has dimensions.

Buttons and links are at least 48×48 pixels, with the main actions in the thumb zone.

Body text is 16 pixels or larger, with no horizontal scrolling.

No popups cover the content right after a visitor arrives from search.

The site has been checked on real phones over mobile data.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate mobile version of my site?

No. For most projects we recommend responsive design: one URL, one HTML document, a different layout via CSS. No mismatches, duplicates or canonical errors. A separate
m.
version is rarely justified and requires much more attention.

Does search count text hidden in an accordion or a tab?

Yes, as long as that text is in the page HTML right after loading. On mobile this way of presenting content is perfectly normal. The problem only arises when the content is fetched from the server after a tap.

Can I leave the desktop version slow if the mobile one is fast?

The mobile version is the primary one for indexing, but desktop visitors haven’t gone anywhere, and a slow page loses their inquiries.

How long does it take to see results?

The crawler notices technical changes after recrawling, which takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. The Core Web Vitals report is based on data from the last 28 days, so it updates gradually. The effect on traffic usually becomes visible within one to three months.

Summary

With mobile-first indexing, your website is whatever the phone sees. Success rests on four things: full content and markup parity with the desktop version, Core Web Vitals that pass on mobile specifically, thumb-friendly usability without intrusive popups, and well-configured lazy loading that doesn’t hide content from the crawler.

If you want to know how your site looks to the mobile crawler, get in touch. We’ll audit your mobile version, fix speed issues as part of our website speed optimization work, and build these changes into your SEO strategy. And if you’re planning a new project, we suggest starting with content prepared with phones in mind; we explain how in our article “Writing content for your website”.
